Golf Dictionary - The Rock Golf Course
Located on the scenic Newhall Estate, 14 miles south west of Edinburgh, this historic property promises an excellent stay for any of our guests. The village of West Linton is 5 miles away, providing local shops, a pub and a great restaurant. The property sleeps up to 8 guests. The beautifully light and spacious, oak floored, open-plan living area has a central, double-sided wood-burner, and three huge arched windows that open onto a paved private terrace - a perfect spot for gazing at the views. Everyone knows the Old Course at St.
Andrews, and every golfer should play it. North Berwick is a lesser-known but equally historic links. Just think: You get to play 18 holes that are the inspiration for thousands of others around the world. It's also the quintessential Scottish experience, thanks to sweeping sea views and plenty of wind. Even though the club is private, visitors are permitted to play on certain days and are treated as members, with full access to the clubhouse and all its amenities.
It's a pure and unpretentious expression of everything that is great about golf; spend a day here with your best friend and your standard for good days will be forever altered. Golf is a very complex game with an incredibly simple purpose: to have fun. And if you're lucky enough to get an invitation, nowhere delivers golf fun quite like the exclusive Bel-Air Country Club. The conditions are excellent, the golf is challenging, and there are Hollywood A-listers everywhere. The course winds its way through some of the most expensive real estate in America.
Every hole has a different story—like when Howard Hughes landed his plane on the eighth fairway—and a famous neighbor. Even getting from the No. It requires an elevator. But the thing that really makes BACC great is the camaraderie. The membership is friendly and outgoing in a way that's genuine and maybe a little bit unexpected. To me that's the whole point of a golf club—to offer way more than just an impressive course.
Cape Arundel is the summer-vacation course that won't ruin your holiday. While this humble course in southern Maine doesn't rank anywhere near the state's top ten, it has deep history George H. Bush has been a summertime regular and a pleasant New England attitude. Measuring 5, yards from the back tees, it is often dismissed as short and unchallenging. But what it lacks in distance it makes up for in charm. The Kennebunk River zigzags through the property, presenting itself on a few different holes in a way that's reminiscent of Carnoustie, in Scotland.
And then there's the main driveway to the clubhouse that cuts across the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 18th fairways. Looking out for traffic while teeing off is the grown-up version of a kid playing touch football in the street. For me, anyway, it doesn't get much better than that.
